Grizzly doesn't sell or offer the 2 plastic gears as metal gears. To be honest think what might have happened if they were metal. With a direct drive setup like the G0704 the plasic gears offer some damage protection but are an obvious weak link. I went through the same issues and decided to install a belt drive.

Grizzly is an importer and as far as I know, they import from China, IMHO, Grizzly is one of the better importers. They buy enough machines to have a larger degree of control than many of the smaller, internet importers. So they often have a better imported machine even when the other brands look like the exact, same thing or at least very similar.

If it were me and I was looking for a G0704/PM25 class machine, I'd call Matt at PM in a heartbeat. Just the upgrades in the drive system and column more than make up the slight difference you will have to pay for a DRO system. I bought a DRO-PRO 3-axis glass scale (GS30 scales...good size for a PM25/G0704) for $800. Very good DRO.
Grizzly Industrial, Inc. sells the Grizzly model G8689 mini mill. The Grizzly mini mill has a 3 Morse taper spindle. It comes with two 3 Morse taper collets; a 3/8 inch collet and a 1/2 inch collet. Harbor Freight Tools distributes the Central Machinery model 44991 mini mill. The Harbor Freight mini mill has an R8 spindle.
