17. Jan 27, 2018. #1. Hi there! I just wanted to post a few pictures and what I learned about converting my new Grizzly G0781 to belt drive. I was excited and setup my new mini mill. Used it for about 3-4 hours and heard a grumbly noise. I was drilling 1/2" holes in aluminum. I switched to low gear and the grumbly noise went away.

Over the years I have owned both the sherline mill and the grizzly mini mill. The sherline was nice but it seems like it took forever to move the head down the column. It also took special sizes of everything from tee nuts to the taper in the spindle. Of course sherline was happy to sell you what you needed at very high prices.

Clausings and rockwell mills for the basement shop are great, easy to move and very desirable for the home shop machinest. Anyway, I am looking into buying a tabletop vertical mill. I have narrowed it down to two finalists. First, the sherline Model 5400 and secondly the Grizzly G8689. I am not sure of the quality and tolerances of the grizzly, but have heard very good things about the sherline, with tolerances of .0005 or more. This is fine for my small shop.

I went to Grizzly and looked close at their mini mills, then came home and order the LMS mill. Grizzly is pretty good stuff, but I feel the LMS is a little better quality. Had mine a couple years now and it does all this knife maker needs to do.
