A rotary quern stone is a 'machine' with a mill stone sitting on top of a furrowed 'bed' stone. The pattern in the lower stone collects the ground material. Over the years I have carved many examples using designs copied from ancient querns during my visits to museums where I handled and studied the subtleties of the design and tool marks.
Quern-stones are stone tools for hand-grinding a wide variety of materials. They are used in pairs. The lower, stationary, stone is called a quern, while the upper mobile stone is called a handstone.The central hole is called the hopper and a handle slot enables the handstone to be rotated. They were first used in the Neolithic era to grind cereals into flour.

At a millstone, even a relatively unskilled miller seems to work as quickly as a legendary one at a quern. For me this does not necessarily justify the hassle of transferring wind or water power* deep underground, but I guess this depends on how close to the surface you settle and how much milling is done at your place.
