To adjust the timing I was using the hand crank to find the dimple. After adjusting the timing and checking out the dizzy, I decided to hand crank the car. The motor fired right up, with zero kick back or unusual issues. Later, when the motor was cold I decided to try and hand crank it. I couldnt get it to start. I just couldnt turn it fast enough.
When crankshaft grinders start getting old and not performing like they did when new there are some simple checks that most shops can make to figure out what is wrong. Since most crank grinders have chucks we will concentrate on those machines.
What is Crankshaft? A crankshaft is a shaft with at least one cranks, particularly the primary shaft of an inner ignition motor to which the interfacing rods are appended. The interfacing rod shakes back and forth as the crankshaft rotates. The crankshaft is a fundamental piece of the motor in charge of converting reciprocating to…
If a crankshaft grinder wobbles while a crankshaft is being ground, it can leave lobes around the circumference of the journal. These may be invisible to the naked eye and very difficult to detect with a micrometer. But if there's any distortion on the surface, it may interfere with the formation of the oil wedge under the shaft if the ...
crankshaft grinding machine. 1.Friction coupling is used in the headstock transmission chain for its easy adjustment 2.Three different work speeds are obtainable by making use of the belts in the work head. The cover can be opened so that the belts can be changed conveniently.
With the bearings and crank in place, set the main cap in place and lightly set the thrust cap with perhaps 10-15 lb-ft of torque on the bolts. Using a rubber mallet, tap the crank forward. This will align the two thrust bearing halves at the rear. Now torque the main cap bolts/studs with the oil pump, if so equipped.
Learning or experience to Od Grind would be a great advantage but not mandatory. One thing that cannot be overstated with Crankshaft grinding is the radius dressing and ensuring you have the right size . Reducing the radius or badly dressed wheel will see broken cranks especially on a Diesel.
AMC-SCHOU crankshaft grinders are built to last with extra-strong castings to ensure stability and long life. All bearings are over-dimensioned to maximise reliability. Antifriction coating eliminates stick-slip effect. Fast and accurate setting-up is ensured by the face-plate system with integrated four-way adjustment. Variable 30° and 72 ...
You want the taper on the radius which is .0026/2 = .0013 because when you measure the tailstock adjustment with your indicator, it will show you 1/2 the difference that the grinding wheel will remove. A .001 adjustment of the tailstock makes the wheel cut .001 deeper at the tailstock which removes .002 off the diameter.
Crankshaft grinding techniques Once you have chosen the proper wheel, the following steps must be taken to safely and successfully grind your crankshaft. ... Tighten the diamond holder, unlock and retract the adjustment stop. Feed the wheel into position fully forward.Using fine feed, bring the diamond into contact with the front face of the ...

crankshaft grinding machine, crankshaft grinder MQ8260A/C. The cover of headstock can be opened so that the belts can be changed conveniently. 3.Friction coupling is used in the headstock transmission chain for its easy adjustment. 8.The bed ways and wheelhead ways are lubricated in an automatic cycle by means of the oil pump.
The crankshaft grinding process consists of removing a small amount of material from the rod and main journals to adjust the part to specific tolerances. Having a perfectly smooth journal is a critical factor in the efficient movement of the piston in the engine. Therefore, the crankshaft must be carefully prepared for each engine build.
Use proper wheel guards on all grinding machines. On bench grinders, adjust tool rest 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the wheel. 5-1. TC 9-524 TYPES OF GRINDING MACHINES From the simplest grinding machine to the most complex, grinding machines can be classified as utility grinding
The crankshaft is then set to spinning at a very slow speed. The grinding stone in the back is then spun up to speed and is then brought into contact with the journal face. As material is removed through the grinding process, the machinist pays attention to how much is removed, then stops the process once just shy of the finished dimensions.
A process for successive grinding of crankpins of crankshaft by a grinder includes clamping the crankshaft at two spaced center journals thereof and rotating the crankshaft around the axis of a crankpin to be ground. To enable the maintenance of highly acurate production tolerances even for small quantities and large crankshafts in an economical manner, only crankpins directly …
the edges of the grinding wheel, with the possibility to adjust radius of the crankshaft journal fillet. The dressing diamond is supplied only on request. Hydraulic wheel dresser It is installed on the top of wheelhead and allows fast dressing of the grinding wheel face with uniform movement, even if the crankshaft is mounted in the machine.

For an investment of just over $2000.00 you will prolong the life of your crankshaft grinder and will give you a separate work station to do your crank polishing. Not all grinding wheels are designed to grind all materials. High performance and diesel crankshafts are harder than the standard Chevys and Fords.
measuring journal diameters during grinding with constant measuring gauge procedures for adjusting crankshaft grinder to suit main bearing journal grinding, including: removing crankshaft from grinder fitting crankshaft in correct direction of rotation setting datum in relation to rear flange and nose for main bearing grinding
FYI - if you're moving toward the really fine end of your grinder's range, be sure to only make large adjustments when the grinder is empty or when the blades are spinning. If you have beans in there and adjust finer while the motor is off, it can jam the grinder which can damage it.
I have seen this type grinder used while growing up in the mid 50's and hanging out at the small town auto shops in our home town.A man who ran an automotive machine shop in a neighboring town had one and would be called in to resize the crank when one of the old splash lubed Chevys would get to knocking and the journal was "flat".The machine hung vertically on …
Crank grinding is the worst money maker in my shop. I charge $150 for a typical V8 and it takes a minimum of 1.5 hrs per. But I take the time to match radiuses, equalize the strokes, correct the index as much as I can, and I always sweep every journal. And like a previous poster mentioned, I set up on the snout and the rear seal surface.

Workpieces, grinding wheel, cooling pump and oil pump and oil pump are all driven by single motor. Rapid advance and retreat of wheel slide is driven by hydraulic. Safety feature: Electric interlocking structure of working table and wheel slide ensures safety in failure of adjusting and grinding. Wheel slide comes with reliable protection cover.
Once the crankshaft is ground, polished and straightened it is checked for hardness via the Rockwell Hardness Scale. If the crankshaft is shipping to a humid climate it is coated in Cosmoline which is a rust proofing agent. Crankshaft grinding is a methodical yet important part of engine remanufacutring.
