Ram is part of protruding arm on the vertical milling machine. This end of the ram is connected with the machine column. Whereas, the other end is connected with the milling head. 6. Ram Locks. As the name implies, ram lock serves to lock part of the ram or protruding arm on the milling machine, so the position does not change. 7. Ram Adjust Handle
It's not much bigger than the Burke but has a much large table. The Hardinge also has an available vertical head. The horizontal spindle takes 5C's and the vertical is 3C so tooling is not an issue for these machines. Within the context of small horizontal or universal mills, I can't imagine anyone having anything bad to say about a Hardinge.
A spindle, also known as a cutting head, is oriented vertically on a vertical milling machine. Because the cutting head is fixed in its vertical orientation, there are other parts of the machine that shift along one or more axes to move the material so it's in the right location to be milled correctly. There are two basic types of vertical ...

A product of the U.S.-Burke Machine Tool Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio, the "Millrite" was designed as a low-cost competitor to the established Bridgeport and other high-class makes of turret milling machine, the Millrite was of essentially simple but strong construction and offered - on the basis of one main column - several alternative head, ram and table assemblies.

New Vertical Head for #1 Burke Horizontal Mill. I slapped this vertical head together in a couple days about 10 years ago. It does a half assed job but the spindle is a fixed .500 bore, so it's kinda limited. Also could use more appropriate bearings. So, here we go with the upgrade to an R-8 spindle.
Adapting Bridgeport M-head to Burke #4 Milling Machine. I own a Burke #4 milling machine, probably from the 50's or so. It is a horizontal mill with an overarm support and the factory provided a vertical head for it. My machine did not come with a vertical head and I am not sure I really need one, for the kind of use I get out of the machine.
[email protected] | FS: Burke #4 Milling Machine w/ Vertical Head. Stefan Bishay. 12/27/20 #57800. Burke #4 Mill. Restored by previous owner. I've used it here and there for small projects and am replacing with something larger. Needs a pin or screw to hold the inner nut for the knee adjustment (pops out if knee is lowered too much).
Re: Burke #4 Restoration by Robert Mac Cormack A few more pics. 1 Parting off new bearing 2 The new bearing 3 Stripping the knee casting Thanks for the tips on the paint strippers guys, I only have one more piece to strip on this mill but my next project will take a bunch of stripper and I'll give them a try.
Also included was the Vertical milling head. I need to machine an arbor for this attachment - an easy, quick job. The new steel arbor for the vertical head is done! I machined the right end of the new shaft for the vertical milling head to. fit into a 3/4" #9 B&S collet rather than machining the taper on to the shaft.
Lubrication for a Burke #4 mill vertical head. This last week I picked up a pair of Burke #4 milling machines. One with the universal table, and fairly complete, the other with no pedestal or motor but with the factory vertical head. The vertical head was frozen, and after disassembly I found it to have been packed with now hardened grease.

Jan 24, 2016. #5. AN, did you ever figure out what was happening with your vertical milling head. I just bought a Burke #4, with a vertical head attachment, and saw the same locking mechanism you described. Iam curious as to what you found. BTW, I just learned the arbors are B&S 9, but the vertical head tapers are MT 3.

Burke #4 Mill Vertical Milling Attachment The Hobby. 24.01.2016· Having not heard from Al, let me ask the general audience. I have this vertical milling head for a Burke #4. I'm having trouble getting the B&S #9 taper into the mill socket. At first, it did not want to align into the socket very well at all.

Most M-heads are 2 Morse though there are some in 7 B&S. These collets are available both on eBay and new through some of the importers. I have seen M-Head additions to #4s but the smaller Rusnok heads are a better fit if you can find one. Check out the Burke group at Yahoo for pictures and additional advice on your mill.
