Mini Mill Solid Column Conversion The original design Sieg Mini Mill( sold as Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Little Machine Shop, Micro Mark, and others) featured a tilting column that few people used. The pivot point and the relatively thin column allowed for a considerable amount of flex in the machine.

Little Machine Shop sells solid column conversion kits, as well as just the column (as a replacement part). I briefly thought about getting a solid column and adapt it to the base I already have, but then decided to get the standard column to stay true to what one would need to do in order to rebuild a standard mini mill.

Even my mill was converted to metric units it was still a lot of work to calculate table travel to "turns on knobs". Metric version is quite d as one turn on the knob moves the table by 1.5mm and the scale on the knob is divided into 75 marks (0.02mm travel per mark on the knob).

A lot of these industrial technologies can be added to DIY CNC mill conversion/builds, so really the only limit is your budget. The current configuration of my mill is relatively simple. It has three stepper motors, three limit switches, a tool length probe, a work offset probe, and handheld pendant for jogging the axes.

Grizzly G8689 Mill DRO. The various incarnations of the Sieg X2 mini mill, including the Grizzly G8689, have a fair amount of backlash in the X, Y, and Z feeds. Among other things, this makes judging how far you're moving the table to the head difficult if you go by counting revolutions of the the handwheels.

Mini Mill. My Mini Mill is a Harbor Freight 44991. It's actually a branded Sieg X2 mill. The size is ideal for the home shop - it won't kill you when you move it. It's not a bad machine, but does take some tweaking. the quirks just added motivation. Right now, it's got fully functional X and Y computer control.
